Do clients need to make reservations?
Yes. Clients are encouraged to make reservations for all scenic train, bus, and ferry services since there is no guarantee that the seats will be available on the day the client plans to travel.
How do clients get their tickets?
Since customers travel and use an “Electronic Ticket”, New Zealand by Ferry will email it to you prior to your traveling.
Clients are advised to print the E-Ticket and have it together with the rest of their travel documents to prevent disruption and any additional costs that may arise.
Please note that a valid photo ID may be requested upon check-in.
Do clients require travel insurance?
It is better to be prepared than not. encourages all their customers to have travel insurance to safeguard your luggage, personal belongings, trip cancellation, and medical or hospital.

What are the check-in times?
For all our long-distance passenger train services, check-in time is 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
The final check-in time for all New Zealand by Ferry foot passengers on a Cook Strait ferry service takes about 45 minutes prior to the scheduled sailing time and 1 hour for passengers taking a vehicle.
For bus services, the final check-in time is 15 minutes before the scheduled time of departure.
What should passengers do if there are any cancellations?
In the unfortunate event that there is a cancellation, New Zealand by Ferry will contact their clients if there is enough time or the clients will be advised at the station if there was no time for a prior warning.
As advised on the clients’ electronic ticket, a processing fee may be charged on top of any fees required by the operator.
Are there toilets available while onboard?
Clients will find toilets and washrooms, only on long-distance trains and ferry services. InterCity bus and coaches do not have onboard toilet/washrooms amenities except for the Starlighter over-night services.
Clients can rest assured that Intercity services do stop at regular intervals to allow their clients to refresh.
